The main types of citrus fruits today are the Grapefruit, the Oranges, the Lemon and the Tangerine. Within each group there are a number of varieties and hybrids that over the years have been produced world wide combining properties from more than one type. Fruit like Minneola, the Mandora, the red varieties of Grapefruit and other types of oranges are a result of such work.
On commercial citrus plantations the basic tree variety that is first cultivated is the Sour Orange, normally used for marmalade and on which one grafts all other citrus types. This way a strong root system is retained from the wild plant resulting in a tree much stronger and resistant to diseases.
Unlike all orange types which are widely grown on the whole Mediterranean coast of Spain, Morocco, Greece and Turkey, Grapefruits require higher temperatures, so Israel and Cyprus are two countries which supply Europe with 70% of it’s needs in Grapefruit, being located further south than other Mediterranean producers.
Lanitis Farm is the only privately owned farm in Cyprus, which grows, packs and exports exclusively its own fruits. In this way the exact history of every single fruit exported is guaranteed high quality and is 100% traceable. All relevant documentation and records are kept by our in-house agronomists, quality controls and technical teams.
